Overview

This case study explores the design of the TOSINDR dashboard, aimed at providing an overview of an organisation's operational technology (OT) network visibility. The goal was to create a user-friendly interface that consolidates critical data, enabling users to monitor and manage their network efficiently. The concept presented was deemed necessary for the board's consideration.

Objectives
  1. User Engagement: Enhance user experience through intuitive navigation and clear data presentation.
  2. Data Visibility: Provide real-time insights into network performance and health.
  3. Decision-Making Support: Equip users with the necessary tools to assess risks and make informed decisions.

User Research

Target Audience
  • Network Administrators
  • IT Managers
  • Security Analysts
Key Findings
  • Users require quick access to critical metrics without overwhelming details.
  • Visual representations (e.g., maps and graphs) facilitate a better understanding of data.
  • Alerts and notifications for low-risk events are essential for timely responses.

Design Process

The dashboard consists of several key sections:

1. Active Assets Overview

  • Map Visualization: Displays geographical distribution of active assets, allowing users to pinpoint locations quickly.

2. Ingress/Egress Monitoring

  • Graphical Representation: Time-series graphs show data flow trends, helping users identify unusual patterns or spikes.

3. Logical Network Topology

  • Diagrammatic Layout: A clear illustration of the network structure, showing connections between devices and nodes.

4. Event Flow and Risk Metrics

  • Summary Statistics: Quick access to low-risk events, new devices, and missing devices, supporting proactive management.

5. Asset Management

  • Table View: An asset list with filter options, enabling users to sort through device types, risk levels, and technical specifications.

Visual Design

Aesthetics
  • Clean Layout: Utilises ample white space to reduce clutter.
  • Consistent Colour Scheme: Uses a muted palette with highlights for important metrics (e.g., alerts).
  • Interactive Elements: Hover effects on graphs and tables enhance user interaction.
Usability Testing

Methodology

Conducted usability tests with target users to gather qualitative feedback on the interface and functionality.

Results
  • Users appreciated the clear layout and ease of navigation.
  • Suggestions included adding tooltips for technical jargon to enhance understanding.

Conclusion

The TOSINDR dashboard concept effectively consolidates essential data into an accessible format. The design prioritises user experience while supporting operational efficiency. Presenting this concept to the board was crucial to secure approval for further development and implementation of the interface in real-world scenarios.

Next Steps
  • Iterate on feedback from usability testing.
  • Develop prototypes for additional features based on user needs (e.g., advanced filtering options).
  • Plan for integration with existing systems for comprehensive data analysis.

This UX case study serves as a foundational document illustrating the importance of user-centric design in creating effective network management tools.
